In celebration of my new domain, I issue a challenge!

The Mythopoeic Society is dedicated to the study and enjoyment of fantasy and mythic literature, especially the works of the Inklings, an informal literary circle at Oxford that included the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and others. Each year the Society awards the best scholarly and literary achievements exemplifying “the spirit of the Inklings” with the Mythopoeic Award.
The challenge is to read seven books between JANUARY 1ST 2008 to DECEMBER 31ST 2008 from the list of Mythopoeic Award Winners. (See? All kinds of brilliant Fantasy books to choose from!) [EDIT: Becky requested that I broaden the challenge to include the nominees for the fantasy and scholarship, which gives you a lot more choices!]
Here are the rules:
- Choose seven books from the list of Mythopoeic Award Winners (or nominees, here for fantasy or here for scholarship).
- Anything on the list is fair game, fiction or non-fiction.
- Post a link to your list in the comments of this post (if you don’t have a website, post your list in the comments.)
- Somewhere in your post, link back to this challenge post. (permalink)
- Read the books between January 1st, 2008 and December 31st, 2008.
- You may start anytime in 2008, but you must finish by the end of December 31st, 2008.
- You may combine this challenge with other challenges.
Here are some banners and buttons to link back with. (Please upload these images to your own webspace. DO NOT DIRECT LINK, PLEASE.)

If you have any questions, please post them in the comments. Otherwise, join up and have fun!
(Note: I am not affiliated with the Mythopoeic Society in any way, and this challenge is not sanctioned by them. I’m just spreading love for the Mythopoeic Award Winners!)

I’ll have to make a 2008 challenge post of some sort, but I’m in and will comment back with my URL. :D
My challenge post is here. :D
I’m thinking about it–my problem will be getting the books, especially since I already have so many unread still stacked around the bed, the office, on the shelves, in the nightstand drawer…you get the picture. I’ll add the link to my booklog, but, honestly, no promises. :-/
Hoshichan: Woohoo!! Thanks for joining in!
domy: okay, just lmk when you decide. :)
Quick question…
what about including finalists for this challenge? I found a handful three or four award-winners that I’m interested in reading, but not seven. However, if I could include finalists in the challenge, I could find more that I was interested in reading…and get my quota of seven books.
Great banners! Good luck to all participants! :D
Becky, I don’t see why not! I’ll add that to the post. Thanks for the idea! :)
@domy, I know how you feel, I don’t own a single book on my list, lol. Oh well, any excuse to increase my library. ^^;;
I will definitely be joining in then. Here is the post with my announcement and my list of potential reads. Since I rely on the library mostly for accessing these titles, my list is subject to change. But I hope to read a lot of Gaiman and maybe some Robin McKinley for the challenge.
http://blbooks.blogspot.com/2007/12/just-letting-you-know.html
Excellent! I added you to the blogroll (I’m hoping to figure out a way to move it up above the regular blogroll).
Want to hear something sad? I have never read any Neil Gaiman. O_O I should make sure to do that this year.
Random:
1. If I started a book but never finished it, doesn’t finishing it count?
2. Do I need to pick the seven beforehand or could I just see which seven I can find at the library as I go?
If I have to declare them it’ll take some more research *laugh*
Meiran,
1. Yes, if you pick up a book you’ve started before yet didn’t finish, I think finishing it should count.
2. It’s fine if you want to pick them up as you go. If you go ahead and make a post announcing your participation on your LJ or wherever you want to do it, I can link to that and you can add to a list on that post as you go. Sorry if that sounds a bit convoluted; I’m sleepy and getting over a cold, lol. Basically, I just need a post to link to. :)
Interesting challenge! Hope to find some interesting reads here. I’ve posted my list on my blog. http://nsrbookrelish.blogspot.com/2007/12/list-for-mythopoeic-award-challenge.html
Hi Lenneth! I just wanted to let you know that I updated your link for the What’s in a Name? challenge. I’m really excited to read about your challenge! I’m definitely going to join. (And I bet my mom will, too.) I’ll be back with my link to my list later. Thanks!
What a fabulous challenge! I’m really excited about this one…the hardest thing was narrowing it down to seven! Anyway, here’s my list.
Thanks for hosting this!

Debi, I didn’t notice The Ladies of Grace Adieu was on the nominees list until I saw it on yours. . . . I may have to swap that with something on mine! :)

http://readermandy.livejournal.com/10298.html
Thanks Mandy! I’ve added you to the blogroll. :)
This sounds really cool but I am already committed to about 150 books in 2008 and I have no idea if I can read that much. If later in the year I find I”m doing better than expected, perhaps I’ll sign up for the challenge then. Love the banners/buttons!
That works, Callista. Just comment here again if you find you’re able to join us. :) Thanks for commenting, and thanks for the compliment on the banners! :)
You made me break my vow of not joining any more challenges this year. This one is just too good to resist! here is my list.
Yes, I myself made that vow, but when I saw the Cardathon Challenge I promptly broke it, hehe. I’m sort of eyeing the Short Story Reading Challenge, but I think I’m going to resist . . . for now anyway. ;) I’ve added your link, Nymeth! Thanks for joining up! :)
Wow! What an amazing selection! :] I’m definitely joining in on the fun! My list is here.
Glad you’ve joined us, Giselle! :) I’ve added your link!

I’ve never done a reading challenge before and suddenly I’m signing up for two.
I have to join this challenge! I use the Mythopoeic reading lists as a guide to my fantasy reading, I have for years! but still, though i’ve read about half on the list, there are those other ones I haven’t read yet! so count me in, please. And at least 2 are already on current challenge lists for me, so I have two chosen….what a great way to spread the word about great fantasy being written! thanks!
Yes please! This looks like a great selection of books, definitely count me in :)
Claire, Susan, Rhinoa: I’ve added you all to the blogroll! So happy you’re taking the challenge! :)

What a great idea! I’ve passed along the word here with a link back to you, and some of my friends have posted their lists there, as well.
Hello there. This is such an interesting challenge. Hadn’t heard of these awards. So, I’d like to join in! I’ve already posted my list
It was hard to work this list down to seven! Looking forward to the challenge.
reader and Esther: Excellent! I’ve added your links to the blogroll. Thanks for joining in! :)
I definitely want to take part in this challenge. One question though. Does The Bartimaeus Trilogy (winner in 2006) count as three books or one? I’m still deciding and will post a link here to my list soon. Thanks.
Johnny, I’m glad you want to join us. :) As to whether the Bartimaeus Trilogy counts as three books or one, I’ll leave it up to you. Whichever you prefer. :) Looking forward to seeing your list!
So, I have the first 2 books chosen, 1 of which I just finished: the Amber books by Zelazny (I’m reading the entire chronicles because I have the omnibus). I’ll also probably revisit the Deryni books. Beyond that, we’ll see! :)
Ooh, I really want to read the Amber books, domy! I hope you’ll be reviewing them. :)
I’d like to join you too! My list is here:
http://lostinagoodstory.blogspot.com/2008/02/mythopoeic-challenge.html

Thanks, Johnny! I’ve added you to the blogroll. :)
Hi Lenneth, I’ve finally realized I have to post my list (I’m still new at this blogging!), here it is: http://susanflynn.blogspot.com/2008/03/mythopoeic-award-reading-challenge-2008.html
and I’ve read one of my books already! Working on another one now…..thanks, and I hope all is well with you. Do you want us to link back with our reviews of what we’ve read? Here or to someplace else on your blog? Or just let you know as we read our books?
Thanks, Susan! If you want to link to your reviews in the comments here, that would work just fine. I won’t have to hunt them down that way. :)
Ive finished my second book for the challenge. The first review is here:
http://craftyaspirations.blogspot.com/2008/02/cleverness-is-quality-man-likes-to-have.html
and the second here:
http://craftyaspirations.blogspot.com/2008/03/line-between.html
I finished reading the seven books which I chose for the challenge. I also reviewed them on my site. I watched the film of Stardust which was interesting in addition to reading the book. It was enjoyable doing this. I may do the Graphic Novel Challenge. Thanks for the challenge.
Hola! Just letting you know I just reviewed three books, two of which were for the challenge. : ) here.
I am so in!
http://www.mythopoetica.com/water/?p=629
And I’m going to start reading “Ombria in Shadow” today. Like I needed an excuse :)
Ombria in Shadow reviewed here: http://www.mythopoetica.com/water/?p=647
I have started reading Grendel.
And now Grendel has been reviewed, here:
http://www.mythopoetica.com/water/?p=648
I’m hoping my library stocks some of the other books in my library list - if not, I’ll probably be knocking on Amazon’s door. It’s an excuse to read stuff I’ve been wanting to read, anyway :)
