It's extremely difficult to find the proper assortment of pre-recorded sounds which work in perfect unison to create an audio backdrop that's conducive to productivity and not a detriment to it, so allow me to point you to the perfect place at which to begin a successful search: http://tinyurl.com/2q9j9y

Agreed on LotR (also Star Wars OSTs, for me.) World music works well for me; also ambient/electronic things, and music with lyrics if the tone of the album seems to suit the writing. I'm not so good at tuning out English lyrics though, so I definitely can't listen to a lot of things on my playlist while I write, lest it tint the writing one way or another.

The right music is important for getting into the creative "zone" and staying there. It can be tough to find the right bits of music. I bounce between various ambient electronica (somaFM, etc.), game soundtracks, or music in a different language than my own (so the vocals don't distract me).
